What you will see in this page are assignments that I submit at the Digital Photography School (DPS). It is a forum for some serious photography learning which is so much fun!
“SWEET TOOTH” June 15, 2009
Was at the railway station the other day, and just could not get my eyes off these boxes of sweets… Help me out with the names guys!

“CHAIR” June 23, 2009
An Indian bride is ceremoniously carried off to her husband’s home in this brightly decorated palanquin chair.

“Red, Yellow, Blue [RYB]” June 25, 2009
This was an alternate assignment at the DPS. Red, yellow, and blue are the primary colors on which all other colors are based. One such color had to be the primary focus of the image. I thought that the picture of the slide emphasizes just that.

“Black & White Portrait” July 2009
This picture of a good friend, Elton, has been clicked using the infra red mode on my Sony H50. Also proud to add, that it became his profile picture too!

“A Mistake” July 2009
You’ve taken a photo, you were rushing, you hadn’t checked your settings, SNAP! It came out all wrong – but you like it. We’ve all got a whole hard drive full of these. This assignment was to see my best MISTAKE and I needed to explain why it was a mistake.
Well, the reason why I thought this was one big mistake, was when I forgot to change the ISO setting on the camera. It was previously set at ISO 400 (for some indoor shots) and when I used the same for the outdoor bright lighting, this was the outcome.
As a comparison, here is the image I had intented to frame:

“Humor” July 8, 2009
Pictures can sometimes make us laugh or simply bring a smile to our faces. In this assignment I had to evoke a particular response in the viewer, not just a passive viewing. Had to let my inner comedian come forth! This was my entry for the assignment:

“Machinery” July 15, 2009
Old or new, what would we do without machines? How interesting can you make a picture of a somewhat cold inanimate object? This was my submission for this assignment. I called it The Tired Cart

“Mixing Elements” Aug 5, 2009
“Mixing Elements” was an assignment on DPS where the image needed to show two or more of the basic elements of earth, air, fire and water, not just one. The picture I took captures wind and fire… the moment before the flame was extinguished!

“Weather” Aug 27, 2009
Menacing rain clouds approaching the city of Mumbai at its famous ‘Marine Drive’. The roar and spray of the waves draws hordes of people here during the monsoons.

“School Days” Sept 5, 2009
A school will never be a school without kids running around!
This assignment was surely more fun than the ones given while I was at school!

“Seven Deadly Sins” Sept 12, 2009
“Seven Deadly Sins”. Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride.
For this assignment, I had to pick one and and create an image that shows that particular sin
While experimenting with the Infra red mode on my Sony H50, my neice came charging at me!
Ended up as a classic example for WRATH and and “negative space” 😉

“Contrast” Sept 19, 2009
This picture was submitted for the assignment to display “Contrast” which could be used as an element in visual design in color as well as black and white. Contrast can be found in textures too. And this picture speaks for itself

“Shadows” Sep 26, 2009
This week’s assignment “Shadows” was related to the previous one, Contrast. Usually when we are taking our shots, we try to eliminate shadows caused by uneven lighting. This week I had to consider shadows as an element in my composition.

“Collection” October 3, 2009
This week the assignment was ‘Collections’. Most of us have something we collect: seashells, coins, antique what-cha-macallits, etc. This was my entry. They are terracotta idols of the Hindu deity Ganesha in an array of traditional musical instruments.

“Bokeh” October 11, 2009
Bokeh (derived from Japanese, a noun boke 暈け, meaning “blur” or “haze”) is a photographic term referring to the æsthetic quality of the out-of-focus areas of an image produced by a camera lens using a shallow depth of field. Essentially, bokeh is an aesthetic and qualitative measure of light distortion in the out-of-focus areas of an image, and is primarily caused by lens aberrations and aperture shape. (Source)
It’s a very ordinary flower, but add a bokeh to it and it takes on a charm beyond compare

“Window” October 18, 2009
This week’s assignment was WINDOW. I thought of displaying something on a humorous note.
This langur is a common visitor at home. Here is Mom trying to “sell” it some bananas while my neice looks on in wonder!

“Scary or Spooky” October 22, 2009
What is it that scares you? Gives you goose-bumps? Makes your heart stop? This assignment was meant to do just that.

“Architectural Detail” October 31, 2009
Most often it is the small things of life that fascinate me. So also in photography. In every architectural piece you will always find an aspect of wonder, if only you look closely.
This picture was taken at the dock on the other side of Kala Academy.

“Economy” November 9, 2009
Around the world the economy is effecting us in many different ways. For the assignment, I had to come up with a shot that illustrates it in some way. This was my entry

“NOISE” November 12, 2009
This was my attempt of trying to show sound in a visual medium!

“KINETICS” November 13, 2009
Kinetic photography was the assignment this week. It’s a style where the only moving object is part or all of your camera. Be it a zoom of your lens, movement of the camera in your hands, or, if your truly brave, tossing your equipment in the air. Trickier than you might think, these images require long shutter speeds and small apertures

“Thankful” November 27, 2009

“Storyboard”, December 8, 2009
Do your pictures tell a story? This assignment was to try to tell a photographic “story” in 3 images. It needed to have a beginning, middle, and end and should not need any explanation. If there is need for a written explanation, then you’re not getting your story across in a visual way..

“Technology” December 14, 2009
Technology, the subject of this assignment, is all around us. It affects almost everything we do- our lives, our jobs, and the lives of others. This is a picture of random tech-stuff on my table: Cordless, car keys and coffee mug. (the mobile is also peeking in from the corner)

Hey I liked all what your pictures have to speak here and just thought I should let you know! 🙂 I am not an avid reader but these tid-bits kept me online for a long time than usual. I have seen almost all your photography and read few posts..you seem to be enjoying your existence..and that is what LIFE is all about! ‘Focus’ and ‘out of focus’ life- redefined!
Thanks for that meaningful comment!
